About the job

YEHUDI MENUHIN SCHOOL

We believe theatre is essential. Essential for our times, essential for our city. Together we make bold and brilliant theatre and we make it for everyone.

Sheffield Theatres is the largest producing theatre complex outside London, comprising of the Crucible, the Lyceum, and the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse, formerly the Studio, and welcomes over 400,000 people on average to performances across the three stages. Sheffield Theatres productions are often highly celebrated, critically acclaimed and nominated for the industry’s top awards, such as Life of Pi which won 4 UK Theatre Awards in 2019 and 5 Olivier Awards in 2022, including Best New Play, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Sheffield Theatres also has very active and successful community engagement and artist development programmes, including the Sheffield People’s Theatre and Young Company, as well as the Bank Programme, which develops local creative talent on a yearly basis. The Crucible has also played host annually to the prestigious World Snooker Championships since 1977.

At an exciting time for Sheffield Theatres, and having celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Crucible and Playhouse in 2021, the Board now seek candidates for the role of Chief Executive to succeed Daniel Bates, who steps down after 13 years in the role. Reporting to the Board, and working closely with the Artistic Director, Robert Hastie, and Deputy CEO, Bookey Oshin, the Chief Executive will have responsibility for the business management and organisational leadership of one of the UK’s most ambitious and successful and performing arts organisations. The Chief Executive will not only sustain Sheffield Theatres’ sector-leading position, but grow and adapt the organisation into the future, further developing Sheffield Theatres’ reputation as a leading producing theatre.

Candidates will be proven leaders in the arts or creative industries with experience of working closely with an Artistic or Creative Director. They will bring inspirational leadership to all, embedding an engaging, inclusive culture where all staff can thrive; they will have strong financial and business acumen, with experience of managing significant budgets and developing income streams, utilising strong advocacy and stakeholder skills. Candidates will also bring an understanding and experience of the role of creative learning, outreach and talent development, and have a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and widening access.

Sheffield Theatres Trust is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to fair and open competition. We recognise that there are still significant social barriers and we want to particularly encourage applicants of African and Caribbean heritage, people of South, East, West, Central and South East Asian heritage, people of Middle East and North African heritage; and people who are ethnically diverse or have experienced racism,* are deaf or disabled, LGBTQA+, from a low socio-economic background, or for any other reason are under-represented.
