My questions are, does ‘mid-high end’ condensor mics eliminate sibilance? and is there a ribbon mic you’d recommend for VO?

Hi Shankar. Using an external microphone cancels background noise and provides better sound quality. The best way to see which cameras work with external microphones is with a look at the descriptions written by the manufacturers. I made a note where I could of which cameras have this feature.

Great review! How do I know which videocameras I can connect an external mic to? The Panasonic HC-V770’s spec sheet doesn’t list an external mic input. I think for good audio one needs an external mic, along the lines you have suggested. Thanks,

I like how the system is set up in google and you stream and also talk to students individually. I collect information and go back to look at student work, I have meetings and also display info for my parents to connect their learning in Google classroom.

As a Railway Society we have an online archive, free only to members. When we first published them on the FlipHTML5 platform we ticked the box to stop Google from indexing them. However, this wasn’t enough and our content soon appeared on the internet when certain phrases and words were used.

To prevent Google and other bots from scraping and spreading our content over the web we did the following:

We published them in an on line forum which was itself password protected. We then coded the page the bookshelves were displayed on in order to tell the bots not to scrape the page. Finally we password protected each book. Clearly over the top but it stopped other pages from appearing. To avoid having to give each member their own password for each book we used the same password for every book.

After extensive searching, and watching/reading reviews, I went with the Sony HXRMC2500 for several reasons… I like the look of them (have that professional look), I like Sony, they are not needed to be transported, instead staying in my newly built studios, they were just within budget and they have HDMI output.

Learning should never stop and technology is the best channel for that. Teachers should make videos and share them with the students through WhatsApp, YouTube or school homework applications. There should also be some provision for clearing the doubts. Besides, the students should utilise this time and learn life skills. In any case, there is an ocean of videos on every topic on YouTube, which the students can access for free.

Hi Susan, thanks for the feedback! The biggest potential problem I see with using older cameras is that you likely won’t get the resolution that you need. Modern webcams stream and record at 720 and 1080p to produce a clear video. Your older cameras might be fine if you aren’t concerned about clarity. I would recommend the Go Pro though as you can buy accessories to carry it on your body and you walk around and talk with your small groups.

It seems like the Go Pro might be a way to go. I also have 15 old flip cameras that I was thinking about repurposing–I have them I might as well try video capture with them too…I’d sure appreciate your ideas. Thanks!

Thank you for your question, Jeff! One of the most common questions and complaints that I get about recording studio monitors is that they do not have any bass sound. It may surprise you to learn that is exactly what you want them to sound like. When a monitor reproduces a clean sound, it does not create the typical enhancements that are so commonly added to the sound by home stereo systems. Most home stereo systems automatically add bass and treble to audio recordings. When recording in a studio, you want to record a more “flat” sound so that later when these recordings play on a home system they will sound normal and not too bass-heavy.
A home recording studio monitor is best when it creates a reference sound that will sound good on many different systems. That is easier to accomplish if the monitor does NOT add bass and treble to the sound, which will be added later by the other systems.

Hi, Ted. Thank you for your question. The desktop monitors that are good quality are about $100 for a pair of three-inch monitors. The larger, professional recording studio monitors can run as high as $700 each for an eight-inch size from a top name luxury brand and around $200 to $300 each for a strong brand that is more modestly priced. The more expensive monitors are sold individually or in pairs. Depending on the sound quality conditions that you are checking, you may only need one monitor, not two.

That is an excellent question. The very best monitors can sound terrible in a room, which has not been adjusted with proper sound treatment. Monitors do not correct problems with reflections of sound in a room. They may make a bad recording in a poorly treated room sound even worse on playback. The first thing you want to do is to set up your sound recording room properly to get rid of unwanted reflected sound, echoes, and reverberations. You can find out how to do this by searching for articles about acoustic tiles and sound treatment on this website.

You can analyze the sound in your recording studio room by using room acoustics software such as REW. You do this by recording a test tone using the sound analysis software. Then, you can learn what is needed to adjust the room. After all the adjustments are made, you can then decide which monitors are best suited for the sound dynamics you find in your new home recording studio.

Try Quiz Creator by PC Shareware. It’s a one-time cost of 29.95 and creates very professional quality html quizzes (both multiple choice and short answer question types) and it’s a VERY easy program to use.

It can take some time in mastering the tool but once that is done, it can be a highly customizable tool.

Comment on 15 Best Voice Over Microphones for Narrating & Voice Acting in eLearning (2023 Guide) by Chartreuse https://myelearningworld.com/10-quality-voice-over-microphones-for-a-home-recording-studio/#comment-1062 Sun, 10 Nov 2019 00:06:57 +0000 https://myelearningworld.com/?p=787#comment-1062 Hi Scott,

Thank you for creating such a detailed article. I am trying to find a mic for recording audiobooks that will enable me to pass ACX quality control. I have tried the Snowball but had manufacturers problems with all three, now the Rode NT. I am on my 3rd one of those with manufacturers issues in the first two (and I do treat them care).

Now with the one I have, even with all appliances off, the laptop more than 4 feet away and no noise from the outside, I am still having sound problems. Even if the noise floor is sufficiently low, if I am the correct distance from the mic. I am picking up mouth clicks and there are crackles in the pauses. If I am further away than 6 inches, even projecting, the volume is too low.

I am using Garageband with Rob Dirck’s settings. Is the answer to upgrade the mic? If so, what will enable me to get the sound clean enough for ACX? I don’t have an unlimited budget but I would be willing to exchange the Rode for something a bit more expensive if it solves the issues.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have been working on this for a year now, and just found your article. Here’s hoping.

I’m new to social media, but was just about to start using Twitter to share short videos (from each of the three schools that I work in) with the students’ parents. I was going to use a different hashtag for each group so searching would be easier. Earlier today, a friend suggested Google Classroom, as it appeared to her that the videos would be easier for parents to see and sort through, especially as this could be done on a computer rather than on a phone. If I only want a program for this purpose, would GC (or Edmodo or Schoology) suit my needs better than Twitter? Thank you.

Good general article but it would be fantastic if it went into more detail. Am completely disenchanted by Articulate’s html5 implementation and support. I was sold on Studio 13 to got to html5 to find that the lessons didn’t resume properly. Then I was told it was all fixed in 360 but its not. So can you recommend something akin to presenter and quiz maker that has html5 support and restricted navigation and resume features?

After they get enough big market share, they will turn it a paid version. And if you have all your students and materials there, what would you then do other than just pay. Look what happened with Google maps, Google made it very expensive for websites which have high traffic just 2 years ago. First they had it free.

As I haven’t evaluate the others, I really don’t know what I’m missing. Would you consider give a new feedback, or just elaborate a new version of your really good comparisson table?

By the way, great analysis, thank you for sharing.

Glad to see this chart. Seems to be useful.
I have a question about one dynamic mic – Telefunken M80. What do you think about this one?
For voice over (for commercials or maybe for film dubbing) at home. Literally for recording in the closet at the moment. In the future I’m planning to build own vocal booth.
And another question 🙂
May the dynamic mics sound a bit “boxy” in this case (like recording in the closet)? I’m asking it because I know about lower sensitivity of dynamic mics.

Regards, Damir.

I have used Google Classroom for teaching purposes and I have only come in contact with Edmodo as a student in different courses.
From the features described I can tell that Edmodo and Schoology are very powerful tools for teachers, but since all my assignments, tests, files, videos, etc., are already on Google it just makes more sense for me to share it using that specific platform. It is easier to set up, most of my students already have a Gmail account, and accesing their documents and sharing files is way easier and faster. On the different occasions I used Edmodo (because of trainers or teacher’s choice) things got confused, lost or were really difficult to find.
I hope Google makes the necessary upgrades to Google Classroom to compete with the rest but after reading this wonderful article I am sure I will try the other two as a teacher to go through the experience.

Very thorough, but I was wondering if you know of an ebook program that can be linked into YouTube videos using their ‘Card’ system? We’ve been using FlipSnack for a few years now, but I’d like to boost readership by linking e-books to YouTube videos. YouTube requires that we be able to ‘verify ownership’ of the site and unfortunately Flipsnack is not able to support that. Does anyone know of an e-book program that has this capability? Thank you!

Nancy, you’re right: there’s no one-size-fits-all here. You need to factor in your setup, your ambience, and your voice. Your first buy may not be the best fit, so might require a bit of trial and error. My advice is not to skimp on it. For pro applications, use pro equipment. Choose wisely and try a few models. Don’t be shy to return any gear that doesn’t work out; most retailers have lenient return policies.

A pin board with cards was never enough to manage anything more than a trivial project and I don’t understand why you would have software that doesn’t use any of the computer’s strengths. I have only used Microsoft Project but I’ve just joined a non profit project that uses Wrike and I’m trying to find a way of improving our project management. I will look at these suggestions but I’ve found that almost all the free stuff I look at has hidden cost or the free versions are too limited.

Question: I work with both Articulate 360 and PowerPoint. Storyline has timelines for each item below the slide in Story view. I’ve used a synthesized voice in Balabolka to create an mp3 narration which is on my desktop. I’m trying to create a timeline similar in function to Storyline in PPT. Just one timeline is sufficient only to automatically play the mp3 clip at a specific point in the slide. Is there a way to do this? Can I use a transition to play an mp3 file? Thank you.

All in my quest to make PPT as robust a CBT creator as dedicated authoring tools.

Quiz-Maker.com has a free version but to take full advantage of all features they have three pricing tiers – $15/month and $29/month are the “normal person” plans. 😉 However, those are “sale” prices. “50% OFF Forever and First 30 Days Free – Sale Ends Soon”.

The 30-day free trial is nice. I’m trying the “standard plan” ($15/month). So far it looks like a good value.

Comment on 10 Best eLearning Authoring Tools & Software for Delivering Courses (2023 Reviews) by Jacky https://myelearningworld.com/top-10-authoring-tools-to-deliver-engaging-courses/#comment-470 Wed, 05 Sep 2018 07:12:11 +0000 https://myelearningworld.com/?p=372#comment-470 Hi again Scott,

You worked hard to create the comparison table and it’s really nice. Btw, I would recommend you put more information about the license price of each tool such as: lifetime license or per year. That’s more helpful to your readers.

I am writing the report but I could not find the time you post the article.

I work as a teacher and I have gone through different test-making tools (getting a bit weary) but can’t seem to find one that has both of these features:
– Possibility to CHOOSE if you want auto-correct or not per question (very important – why is this so rare…?? there should be an option for the teacher to grade some questions manually and some automatically… not all questions are fit for automatic grading!).
– Fill-the-blanks question types (i.e. where you don’t have to make an X or a set of underscores______ in the question)

Do you know if there’s a tool that provides both?

Comment on The 9 Best Flipbook Software Programs for Creating Interactive Books (2023) by Odysseus https://myelearningworld.com/top-10-flipbook-software-programs-for-creating-interactive-books/#comment-440 Sun, 08 Jul 2018 05:26:33 +0000 https://myelearningworld.com/?p=114#comment-440 Hello

I’ve been using Flippingbook for over 5 years but stopped this year to change to Flip Html5 (same editor as pubHMTL5)

I stopped working with Flipping Book because my version was incompatible in HTML5 with Chrome, Opera and IE. Only Firefox and Edge gave a good result. Besides for me (I am a teacher and I don’t have a big budget) the price is excessive and renewing his license costs 80% of the license price.

Fliphtml5 gives me satisfaction but the same publisher has several products under different brands and it is difficult to understand the difference. I almost bought a product that didn’t suit me.

There are also some good ideas like batch or command line but output is not HTML5

Good product but very confusing; be careful and test before producing.

Some bugs but we don’t know if we have the latest version and there is no version history on the site.

The price is equal to 1/3 of flipping book so it is a good purchase overall while Flipping Book does not work on all browsers.

Comment on The 9 Best Flipbook Software Programs for Creating Interactive Books (2023) by Indrani Sen https://myelearningworld.com/top-10-flipbook-software-programs-for-creating-interactive-books/#comment-439 Tue, 03 Jul 2018 12:21:13 +0000 https://myelearningworld.com/?p=114#comment-439 Hello,

I am trying to create an interactive e-cookbook which will have the following:
– 6 categories (e.g. beverage, Appetizers, Entrees, Dessert, Misc. etc)
-Each of these categories would have individual items (could house 10-60 items)
-Users should be able to click on any individual item and view each page (text, audio, video)
-Also users can go to each category anytime

Do you have any recommendations for a specific software?

Many thanks
